Museo Histórico Militar Real Felipe
Museo Histórico Militar Real Felipe (Plaza Independencia, Callao) – Callao is just 18 minutes west of Lima, and has long been the country’s major port. During Peru’s colonial period, the Spaniards built this elaborate fortress (the most impressive built anywhere in the Americas) to protect the coast and the outgoing shipments of gold, silver and other precious goods back to the Royal Crown. Callao’s fort had its share of pirate attacks – the most famous being that of Sir Francis Drake in 1579. Since 1984, the fortress houses the Military History Museum. Military objects, uniforms and weapons of Peruvian soldiers from all epochs are shown next to models of different heroic acts of the Peruvian army. Visitors should certainly join a tour of this worthy destination. Admission: S/. 15 (foreign adults), S/. 10 (local adults), S/. 5 (children unto 13 years). Hours: 9 am – 4 pm (daily).
